Neighborhood House Invites Community Members to Volunteer and Support Neighbors Facing Hardship
Rochester Hills, MI — Neighborhood House is inviting caring community members to share their time as weekly volunteers, helping neighbors who are working through difficult financial circumstances. Opportunities are currently available in the Intake Program and the Clothes Closet Thrift Store.
Across the service area, nearly 8,000 neighbors are living with financial hardship. Volunteers play a vital role in making sure families can connect to help without long waits or added stress. By giving just a few hours each week, volunteers help ensure that support is available when it is needed most.
Intake Volunteers Needed
Intake volunteers are often the first friendly face someone meets when reaching out for help. They welcome individuals and families, review paperwork, conduct an intake survey, and explain available programs and services. For many neighbors, this conversation is the beginning of a path toward stability.
Shifts are typically Monday through Thursday from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at 1720 S. Livernois. Volunteers are asked to choose a regular weekly shift.
This role is especially meaningful for retirees, stay-at-home parents, and anyone who enjoys helping others in a supportive, people-focused environment.
Clothes Closet Volunteers Needed
Located at 44 Mill Street in downtown Rochester, the Neighborhood House Clothes Closet Thrift Store serves both active clients and the wider community. It offers affordable clothing while helping fund essential programs.
Volunteers sort donations, organize items, and prepare clothing for the sales floor, making it possible for shoppers to find what they need with dignity and ease. Shifts are about three hours and flexible within store hours: Monday through Thursday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. A weekly commitment is requested.
This opportunity is perfect for those who enjoy organizing, working with their hands, and contributing behind the scenes to something meaningful.
Training is provided for all volunteer roles, and no prior experience is necessary. A background check is required as part of the application process.
“Our volunteers truly make our work possible,” said Amy Heitman, Volunteer Coordinator at Neighborhood House. “Every conversation, every intake completed, and every bag of clothing sorted helps someone move forward. We are incredibly grateful for the people who choose to give their time to their neighbors.”
